Parakeets are considered to be the smallest member of the parrot family. The word "parakeet" means long tail.

There are many varieties found wild in most regions of the world but most the areas with the most variety include Australia and in the New World of Central and South America.

Parakeets have all the great qualities of the larger parrots; they are active, intelligent, very social, and have the ability to talk. They make good pets and bond well with humans. Depending on size, in a good environment parakeets can live up to 10 years for a smaller bird, with a lifespan of 25 years or more for the larger species.
